1913: A white mob lynches Leo Frank

A white mob storms a Georgia prison and lynches Leo Frank, who was convicted for the rape and murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, an employee of the Atlanta pencil factory that Frank managed. There was no concrete evidence to implicate Frank–the only known Jew lynched in U.S. history–and many historians believe he was killed to send a message to Jews who were known for identifying with African Americans’ political struggles.
