1964: Michael Schwerner and An­drew Goodman are murdered

1964: Two New Yorkers, Michael Schwerner and An­drew Goodman, are registering black voters to vote when they are murdered, along with an African American local man, James Chaney, by a carload of Ku Klux Klansman in Meridian, Mississippi, their bodies dumped in a secret grave. The discovery of the corpses paved the way for the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
